Art and politics

“All art is political”, or even: “All art is propaganda”, as George Orwell said. Since I am interested in language, I am also interested in the ways that art is doing things, contributing to our living paradigms, to our ideologies. Because I am lucky to live in Nancy, I often work with Opéra de Lorraine, and give talks about political and philosophical sides of their opéras. Still Nancy: wonderful jazz festival, Nancy Jazz Pulsations, is also the place where we try to do some philosophy and jazz.

Jazz and politics

Jazz seems to be purely formal. It has rarely any words, and we are not aware of the existence of many protest songs written by Louis Armstrong or John Coltrane. Yet, it started as a political stance aiming at emancipation of African Americans, and while it has its long moments of bourgeois distraction (in Germany, e.g.), it regained a more explicitly political dimension in, e.g., Eastern Europe.

I gave a first talk about this in 2022, in Haifa. I did publish on Israeli rap and politics too. So now I am trying to understand and compare various ideological and political roles that jazz played in different countries. I will then say something about Israeli jazz – the “Kind of blue and white”, as would Miles Davis say. Israeli jazz is fascinating not only because of what it means or might mean, but also because it now goes through its golden age – and I currently try to understand why is it so, with Aryeh Tepper, Gideon Katz and Dan Cahn.
